Macallan Private Eye is perhaps the most iconic NAS Macallan on the market. The bottle has an amazing track record at auction and is incredibly sought after by whisky connoisseurs and collectors.
We have a bottle of Macallan Private Eye listed on our shop for £5,339.
The Story of Macallan Private Eye
The Macallan Private Eye was released in 1996 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Private Eye, the political satire magazine. The bottle was intended to be made widely available to Private Eye readers. As such, it was advertised at £36 plus £6.95 for shipping. Whilst this is astonishingly cheap by today’s standards, in 1996 this was a lot of money to pay for a no-age-statement whisky.

Macallan Private Eye’s label makes the bottle instantly recognisable. It was designed by Ralph Steadman, a British artist known for his social and political caricatures. He had previously worked with Private Eye as well as Rolling Stone and The New York Times.
Much like the magazine for which it was named, the label on the Macallan Private Eye is playfully satirical, with the caricature on the bottle joking that the whisky “could be 196 years old”. Of course, we know that is not the case. The joke also pokes fun at the fact that very little information is given about the age of the whisky. All we know is that some of the whisky in the bottle was distilled in 1961, the year of Private Eye’s founding, with the rest being a vatting of Macallan’s sherried whisky.
