The History Of Sestante
Sestante was established first by Ernesto Mainardi in 1977 in the city of Parma before he setup his independent bottling company known also as Sestante. His love affair with single malt scotch began when started working as a bartender his first tastes were Glenlivet and Laphroaig.
He worked for Co. Import who were the official distributor for Macallan-Glenlivet from Gordon and MacPhail during the 70s. He sold the whisky in just a small bar. Then, sometime in 1975-76 he completed a scooter adventure to Inverness starting in Parma, then travelled onwards to Elgin. During the trip he met Gordon and MacPhail’s George Urquhart, after which point, he started to independently import their bottles directly.
He bottled his first selection of Sestante bottles in 1985, the collection included a 20-year-old Bowmore 1965 and a 14-year-old 1917 Bowmore. Bowmore’s own Ian Morrison reportedly told Mainardi that the 1965 bottle was the best Bowmore he had ever tasted. Rather than just following in the footsteps as Gordon and MacPhail, Sestante bottled whiskies at both 40% and Cask Strength to give their customers a choice.
Although the company did continue the tradition that had been started by Co. Import, they also used to bottle some releases from Macallan-Glenlivet in crystal decanters; working in conjunction with Edinburgh Crystal. Sestante has sold approximately 3,500 crystal decanters with their bottlings.
What To Look For

The Yellow and Green Label
The Ardbeg Yellow and Green label is arguably their most recognisable with hues varying slightly from batch to batch, but the style and layout of the labels remain the same; a turquoise blue with a yellow tag line bordered in maroon with maroon font. There are some bottles where the areas of yellow and blue colour are in reverse, and on occasion the yellow tag changed to a rose-pink colour.
Sestante Dumpy Cadenhead
Sestante also bottled a dumpy collection from Cadenhead which is presented in a dark brown bottle with a screw top. A 1966 Clynelish bottle of 23-year-old Sestante Cadenhead White label recently sold for £13,100.

Other Bottles
Many of the Sestante bottles are topped with a cork stopper. Labels vary tremendously according to the distillery of origin, ranging from traditional plain text information on Gordon & Macphail bottles, to elaborate artistic floral designs on Carato bottles and a selection of tartan labels on black bottles for the Antica Casa Marchesi Spinola.
You may also see Sestante bottles in a decanter, which he famously designed with Edinburgh Crystal in a selection of shapes and sizes all with cork stoppers or driven cork seals.
The Six Factors That Affect The Price Of Sestante Whisky
There are six factors that will affect the price of your bottle of Sestante. These are the age of the whisky, the bottling date, the vintage, whether it is a single cask edition, the level of the whisky and the condition of the label and box.

Age of Whisky
This refers to the number of years the whisky has spent maturing in the cask, not how long it has been in the bottle. The age is indicated on the label and can vary from 5 to over 30 years old.

Bottling Date
This relates to when the whisky was bottled. As bottles from a specific year are consumed, the remaining bottles become rarer, so a ‘standard’ malt released in the 1980’s can become sought after.

Distillation Year
The distillation year refers to the specific year in which the whisky was distilled (made). It is one of the most important factors that can impact the price of your bottle of Sestante.

Label & Packaging
The label on a bottle of Sestante is very important and if it is damaged in any way then this will have a negative impact on the value. A bottle without its original box could be worth up to 30% less.

Level
The level of the whisky has a large impact on the value. It should be into the neck (the narrow part). As alcohol is more volatile than water it is the alcohol that will evaporate first, which damages the flavour.

Single Cask Bottlings
Single cask bottlings are generally more sought after, as by default they are unique. Look out for numbers on your bottle like XXX/250, which would indicate a single cask edition.

“Mark has been very helpful in helping me sell a bottle of whisky which was given to my father many years ago. He was very professional and was always quick to reply to my questions. Not knowing anything about whisky, Mark was there to offer some good advice and I believe he is very knowledgeable about his work. The sale was done very [quickly], and the money was in my bank account the next day. I would highly recommend his services.”
