Services

Whisky can be valuable, complicated and surprisingly difficult to transact properly.

Mark Littler provides independent advice and practical support across the ownership, acquisition and sale of rare whisky bottles and casks. We work with private clients, collectors, estates, professional advisers and family offices in the UK and internationally.

Some clients come to us with a single bottle or cask. Others require a longer-term strategy involving several casks, different maturation periods and future generations. In either case, the principles remain the same: clear ownership, realistic advice and careful execution.

Sell Whisky Casks

Selling a privately owned whisky cask is rarely as straightforward as obtaining a price and accepting an offer.

The value will depend on the distillery, age, strength, cask type, remaining volume, ownership documentation and the market available for that particular whisky. The highest headline offer is not always the strongest or most dependable route to a completed sale.

We provide an independent valuation, identify an appropriate buyer and manage the transaction through to ownership transfer and payment. This includes communication with the warehouse, samples or regauges where required, contracts and the associated administration.

The process is private, carefully managed and explained clearly from the outset.

Buy Whisky Casks

We source whisky casks for private clients, collectors, families and professional advisers.

That might mean one young cask connected to a birth year or family occasion, a mature cask intended for bottling, or a carefully structured holding acquired over several years.

Budgets can range from accessible young casks to significant portfolios assembled for family offices and long-term generational ownership. In every case, we consider the provenance, price, storage arrangements, documentation and eventual routes available to the owner.

A cask should not be bought simply because it is available. It should make sense within the client’s objectives and be owned in a clear and secure manner.

Cask Tracing and Ownership

Whisky cask ownership is not always as clear as the owner expects.

We assist clients who need to identify where a cask is held, confirm its status, establish contact with the warehouse or understand the documents supplied when it was purchased.

Where possible, we can help reconcile broker paperwork with warehouse records, clarify the ownership structure and identify what is required before the cask can be sampled, transferred, sold or bottled.

This service is particularly relevant where a broker has ceased trading, communication has broken down or a cask has been held for many years without recent documentation.

Cask to Glass

A private bottling can mark a family occasion, commemorate an important event or create something entirely individual.

We can manage the process from the selection of the whisky through to the finished bottles. Depending on the project, this may include sampling, bottling, label and packaging design, regulatory requirements, duty, logistics and delivery.

Some projects require a straightforward, well-presented bottle. Others involve specialist designers, bespoke packaging and international fulfilment. The service is shaped around the whisky, the number of bottles and the purpose of the project.

Legal and Due Diligence

Problems with whisky cask ownership frequently become apparent only when an owner attempts to obtain information, transfer the cask or sell it.

We review proposed purchases, ownership documents, valuations and claims made by third-party businesses. We can also examine existing holdings, identify areas of concern and explain what further evidence or professional input may be required.

Where a matter has become contentious, we work alongside solicitors and other advisers and can provide specialist opinion in disputes involving whisky casks, valuations, market practices and ownership.

The purpose is not to create unnecessary complexity. It is to establish what is known, what can be verified and what should happen next.
