A History of Alwyn Carr
Alwyn Carr was a gifted silversmith who entered into a partnership with Omar Ramsden. Ramsden & Carr pieces are highly sought after and valued, due to the high-quality craftsmanship, and the flair for public relations that Ramsden possessed.
Alwyn Carr was born in 1872, and met Ramsden during evening classes at the Sheffield School of Art. Both men went on to take summer classes at the Royal College of Art in London, and subsequently formed a partnership in which they would produce stunning pieces of silver. Their creations included teapots, tea services, and plates.
The two men capitalised on the appetite for handmade silver due to the rise of the Arts and Crafts movement. Their pieces were influenced by Gothic and Renaissance art. Celtic-style inscriptions became a tell-tale sign of a piece made by Ramsden & Carr.
Omar Ramsden had an aptitude for public relations, meaning that he marketed the pair’s pieces remarkably well. Alwyn Carr, as well as providing financial backing, was a gifted designer and silversmith, working on and creating many pieces himself. This is in contrast to Ramsden who, whilst having an eye for design and ample knowledge of the trade, never worked on a piece himself.
In 1915 Carr joined the British Army and went away to fight in the First World War. The partnership subsequently broke down in 1919. Ramsden continued working in the industry and achieved great commercial success – his pieces are highly-valued and sought after. Carr, however, continued to produce pieces of silver with his own hands and in his own studio. Thus, Carr’s creations are much rarer, and fantastic finds for any antique enthusiast.
