To continue our month of Springbank here at Mark Littler Ltd, we are bringing you the top 5 Springbank bottles according to Serge Valentin and Angus MacRaild at WhiskyFun.com. Now that you know which Springbank bottles have sold well at auction, we’re taking a look at which bottles are the best to drink according to two of the best critics in the industry.
WhiskyFun is one of the most well respected whisky review websites in the industry and their scores often have a lot of influence over whisky collectors and investors. Each whisky is given a score out of 100 and any score over 90 is considered a ‘winner’.
With that said, let’s see which Springbank bottles earned a place on that top 5 ranking.
The top 5 are as follows:
- 2004 Springbank 12 yo 100 proof (57.1%, OB, imported by Samaroli, early 80’s, 2400 bottles) -98
- 2009 Springbank 24 yo 1966/1990 (58.1%, OB, Local Barley, cask #443) – 96
- 2009 Springbank 12 yo ‘100 Proof US’ (50%, OB, +/-1995, ‘Double Dark’, USA, +/-1995) – 95
- 2005 Springbank 12 yo ‘100° Proof’ (57%, OB, UK, ‘rather light vatting’) – 95
- 2013 Springbank 1965 (46%, OB, tall black label, 75cl, +/-1985) – 95
In number one spot on the WhiskyFun top 5 Springbank bottles, is the Springbank 12 Year Old 100 Proof which was bottled by Samaroli in 1982. This bottle is one of 2400 bottles produced and as yet has only appeared on the secondary market 6 times. This Springbank whisky was distilled in 1970 and bottled in the early years of Samaroli, an independent bottler that has become incredibly sought after. Its tasting notes include orange, spice, and herbs to name only a few and its this bold flavour that was deserving of 98 points from WhiskyFun, a score that is very rarely achieved.
