What is Your Whisky Worth?

Have you ever wondered what your bottle of whisky is worth?  We can help you value your bottle and get you the best possible price should you want to sell it.

The market for whisky has increased dramatically over the past few years and 2018 saw prices reach record levels.  The most sought after bottles are those from limited edition runs and those that were bottled before the year 2000.

There is a huge premium for bottles that were bottled before the 1990s.  These bottles can be identified as they will state their volume as being 75cl or 26 2/3 fl ozs.

Macallan continues to be the most sought after single malt whisky.

Single Malts vs Blended Whisky Value

Single malt Scotch whisky is made exclusively from malt barley and is distilled in pot stills, after which it is left to age in oak casks for more than three years.

Blended whisky is made up of a mixture of single malt whisky from different distilleries.

As blended whisky is a much more common commodity its value is limited and is worth a fraction of the value of single malts.

What to Look For

The six factors that affect the value of Whisky bottles

Macallan Whisky Vintages

Age of Whisky

This relates to the time the whisky spent in the cask not how long it has been in the bottle.  This is indicated on the label and can vary from 5 to over 30 years old.

Macallan Whisky Worth

Bottling Date

This relates to when the whisky was bottled (1980’s, 1990’s etc). Holding onto a bottle for a long time does not necessarily mean its value will increase as the whisky does not improve once bottled, unlike wine. However, as bottles are consumed, the remaining bottles become rarer, so a ‘standard’ malt released in the 1980’s is now considered sought after.

What is Macallan Worth

Distillation Year

The distillation year refers to the specific year the whisky was distilled (made).  It is one of the most important factors that can impact the price of your bottle of whisky.  A vintage is expressed as a date on the bottle from the year the whisky was produced.  The vintage has no effect on the quality of the whisky (unlike wine vintages) but they are viewed in the same way as coin dates or stamp sheet numbers (where collectors try and collect one from each year).

Macallan Royal Marriage Worth

Limited Editions

There are two types of limited edition bottlings.  The first are single cask editions and are limited to the number of bottles of whisky contained in the cask.  The second type of limited edition are those that were made for a specific event, such as The Macallan Private Eye or The Macallan Royal Marriage.

Label & Packaging

The label on a bottle of whisky is very important and if it is damaged in any way then this will have a negative impact on the value. Bottles also need to have their original cartons/boxes if they were issued with them in order to get the best price. A bottle without its original box could be worth up to 30% less.

Macallan Whisky Level

Level

The level of the whisky should be into the neck (the narrow part).  As alcohol is more volatile than water it is the alcohol that will evaporate first which damages the flavour.  If the level is lower than the neck it will have an impact on the price. It is advisable to use Parafilm to seal the capsule.

I am very grateful to Mark who has helped me obtain a good price for 2 vintage bottles of Macallan whisky. If I had the good fortune of some other bottles to sell I would not hesitate to use his services again. I was delighted with the outcome and would definitely recommend Mark and his expert services to others. Well done and THANKS.

Mark has been very helpful in helping me sell a bottle of whisky which was given to my father many years ago. He was very professional, and was always quick to reply to any of my questions. Not knowing anything about whisky, Mark was there to offer some good advice and I believe he is very knowledgeable about his work. The sale was done very quick, and the money was in my bank account the next day. I would highly recommend his services.

I found Mark's details online after looking to sell a collectable bottle of whiskey. I was going to use a well know auction site but Mark secured an offer higher than the highest estimation from any auction house, within days, even after the 10% commission was deducted. Communication was perfect; punctual, to the point and polite. Collection and delivery were taken care of by Mark and instruction was clear and easy to follow. Payment was received to my bank within days of posting the bottle. I can't recommend Mark enough, he runs a tight ship gets top end offers from his clients and delivers quickly. Perfect. Many thanks.

Fantastic service. I know nothing about whisky but was interested to know if two bottles I had were worth selling. Swift response, great and friendly advice followed by a very quick and efficient service. Fantastic customer service, worth every penny of the 10% commission - highly recommended. Many thanks Mark.
