IS THE WHISKY MARKET ABOUT TO COLLAPSE?

Is the whisky market about to collapse?

We have been saying that very buoyant market for single malt whisky, especially Macallan, cannot last and must come to an end.

Some investors ignore all of the signs, such as bottles increasing 100% in value each year.  In the case of Macallan Private Eye (READ MORE HERE) the value has risen over 6000% since it was released.

Probably the best evidence yet that those inside the trade believe the prices are no longer sustainable is the recent sale of a cask of Macallan by the Tompson family for £285,000.  This in itself it nothing surprising, but they have subsequently said:

“If anyone made us an offer for some or all of the portfolio, we would be obliged to look at it. If you look at it in football terms, every footballer is available at the right price.”

Andrew Thomson is the head of the family who have been in the whisky industry for generations.  Peter Thompson Ltd was the sole agent for Mcallan in the 1970’s and has huge holdings of “crown jewels” such as 1970 Glenlivet hogsheads and Macallan butts.

The fact that the family are now considering offers for their entire portfolio is a strong sign, in our eyes, that they believe the market to be unsustainable and are looking to cash in while prices are so high.
