Talisker has announced the release of Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old, an ultra-aged single malt inspired by the volcanic origins of its home on the Isle of Skye. Limited to just 622 bottles worldwide, the expression is one of the rarest in the distillery’s history and carries a recommended retail price of $5,250 excluding taxes.
The whisky was first matured in refill American oak hogsheads before undergoing a four-month finish in new American oak casks toasted using a distinctive technique. Rather than employing traditional open flame, the distillery heated volcanic rocks sourced from Skye and rotated the barrels around them. Steaming during the process kept the casks hydrated and maintained a controlled temperature, with the absence of combustion said to draw out greater fruit character, depth and complexity.

Talisker first introduced the volcanic rock-toasting method with its Molten Seas release.
Greg Bruce, Master Blender, said: “Talisker Magma represents a new frontier in how we approach cask finishes at the distillery. Working with volcanic rock-toasted casks allowed us to unearth new depths, revealing greater layers of fruit, smoke and spice.”
He added: “There’s a deeply elemental connection in this whisky, linking the distillery to Skye’s volcanic landscapes, while preserving Talisker’s signature maritime character and chilli-pepper warmth.”
The official tasting notes from the brand describe a nose of soft minerality, a sea-washed character and Talisker’s familiar chilli-pepper warmth. The palate is said to deliver a smooth, silky texture building into volcanic spice, salinity and sweetness. The finish is long and balanced, with cooling Sichuan pepper and a warm afterglow.
The bottle itself is crafted from 100 per cent recycled glass, featuring a gradient fade from clear to black intended to evoke ocean depths and molten stone. Each bottle carries a hand-sculpted glass stopper inspired by volcanic obsidian, making every piece subtly unique.
Talisker Magma 47-Year-Old will be available through private client teams and select luxury retailers in the UK, parts of Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, the United States and Global Travel Retail. Talisker was founded in 1830 and remains the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, a location whose dramatic volcanic coastline has long defined the brand’s maritime character.
