Sell Your Bottle of Macallan 18 Year Old
Everything you need to know about Macallan 18 Year Olds
Macallan 18 Year Olds
The Macallan 18 Year Old series is the longest ongoing series by Macallan. To build a vertical of Macallan 18 Year Olds is a dream held by many whisky collectors and investors alike.
When the Macallan 18 Year Old series first began, Glenlivet had more status within the industry than Macallan did. As such, older Macallan bottlings state that the whisky was distilled at “Macallan-Glenlivet”. This is hard to believe considering Macallan’s position in the market today.
It is thanks to series such as The Macallan 18 Year Olds that Macallan has such stature today. At a time when blended malts dominated the market, Macallan laid down casks and left them to age in preparation for the age of the single malt.

What affects the value of Macallan 18 Year Olds
The label
There have been a few redesigns since the release of the first Macallan 18 Year Old in 1984. The bottles start out with the iconic early golden and cream label from 1974 to 1980, run through the short-lived splash of blue on the bottle that appeared briefly from 1981 to 1985, before the 1986 unmistakable bottle redesign and switch from distilled year to release year for the 2016 release.
The condition of the label on your Macallan 18 Year Old can drastically affect the value. Any creases, tears, or marks will devalue the bottle. Make sure to keep your bottle stored in a temperate climate with a moderate humidity level in order to preserve the label.
The bottle
The old-style Macallan 18 Year Olds (1965 vintage – 1986 vintage) were presented in standard Liquor Bottle Scotland bottles. The earlier bottles were 75cl, but those bottled in 1990 or after were presented in 70cl bottles.
The 1986 vintage (bottled 2004) saw a drastic redesign in terms of the label and the bottles. From then on, the Macallan 18 Year Olds were presented in 70cl tapered bottles, much like the ones we still see today (although the modern release bottles – 2018-2020 – have much broader shoulders).
Each Macallan 18 Year Old has a gold, foil capsule over a cork stopper. The capsule should remain intact. Any damage to the capsule will result in a bottle becoming unsaleable.
The box
The Macallan 18 Year Olds have had various different boxes. The 1967 to 1980 vintages come with a cream box with a diagonal blue stip across the bottom half of the bottle. 1981-1985 come with the tube in the image above. From 2004-2017 the whiskies came with a blue box. Today, they come with a black box.
The absence of a box can negatively affect the value of your bottle, as collectors see the bottle as more collectable if it comes with an accompanying box.
The condition of the box is also an important factor to consider. If the box is damaged then this will decrease the value of your Macallan 18 Year Old.
The level
As with all whisky, the spirit level in the neck of your Macallan 18 Year Old bottle is important and has a significant impact on the value. Ideally, the liquid should sit in the wide part of the neck. Lower levels, below the shoulder especially, will lower the value of the bottle.
When you are storing your bottle please consider adding an additional seal – clingfilm or a specialist seal such as Parafilm – over the capsule. This will help stop the level dropping. Always store your bottle upright and in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
The vintage
The Macallan 18 Year Old series has been ongoing since 1984, making it the longest-running series by Macallan. Older vintages such as those from the 1960s and early 1970s command a premium over their modern counterparts. However, the modern bottlings still hold a lot of value, due to the fact that they are part of this ongoing series.
Many have recognised the investable nature of the series and now collect multiple vintages. In 2020, we sold a Macallan 18 Year Old vertical on behalf of Matthew Robson, whose father bought him a bottle every year from 1992 to 2019. The collection sold for £44,000 and made headlines across the world.

How we can help you sell your bottle
Private Sale
Selling your bottle through our audience of private buyers can get a high price for you bottle and the convenience of a quick turn around on your sale. All we need is a good picture of your bottle stood up, ideally with the box if you have it and we can collect no obligation offers from our buyers for your consideration.
Auction
Auction can be the most suitable route for some bottles offering a wide audience of buyers. It is also important to choose the right specialist auction for you bottle, and we can advise you on this.
Shop
Our online store launched in 2020 with an aim to bridge the gap between selling at auction and the prices you see at retail, helping you get more for your bottle. Selling via our online shop can achieve more than at auction or private sale but can take longer to complete, so requires the time to get your ideal price realised.

We use the photograph to check:
- The condition of the bottle, label and box

Once you have decided to accept an offer we will issue you with a contract for the agreed price.

It is the same as the contract you would receive if you sold at auction, except the price is agreed and forms an integral part of the agreement. It outlines all our legal obligations to you acting as your agent and also covers payment terms.
Our brokerage fee is 10% for private sales, including VAT.
There are no other charges, except the courier fee if you decide to use that service. Please see STEP 4 for more information.

Account Manager Hannah... Thompson completed the transaction faultlessly throughout. She was quick to establish which were the highly collectable bottles and which I would just have to enjoy drinking. I had a very good idea which bottles would fetch the best price and Hannah confirmed that for me. After putting the bottles to their database of clients, I soon had a best offer which stacked up against other vendors. On accepting the offer a courier delivered all the packing boxes the following day and we dropped everything packed to the post office. Hannah confirmed receipt and a couple of days later Mark called to confirm that he had just sent the proceeds to me - All very painless!
