The Rare Malts Selection is an official series from Diageo that was created to showcase exceptional examples from its huge range of current and closed distilleries. The series ran from 1995 to 2005, when it was essentially replaced by annual releases from specific distilleries.
Each release was a single cask, cask strength whisky—meaning it is not dissimilar to their current Exceptional Cask format. It does mean that each limited bottling is distinct, and so as well as variation between distilleries there can be significant variations between prices achieved by bottles that are seemingly identical other than, for example, a slight change in ABV.

Rare Malts Selection: Market Analysis
Despite running for just 10 years the series showcased a large number of casks, and while limited some bottles are significantly less scarce than others. For this analysis we looked at a snapshot of 100 auction results in March 2025 giving an introduction to the performance of this wide reaching series.
Unsurprisingly, it is the distillery that is the most notable indicator of potential, with closed distilleries commanding exceptional premiums. Releases from Brora, Port Ellen, Clynelish and Millburn occupy the premium tier, but even just looking at bottles from Brora the spread of values is still £800 to £4,700. Glenury Royal, Rosebank and Convalmore form a solid middle tier around £500 to £900. Lesser-known closed distilleries and more common expressions typically achieve more modest results around £300 to £500.
Packaging integrity and fill levels remain crucial valuation factors, with original presentation materials significantly impacting hammer prices. The Rare Malts Series is renowned for having variable fill levels, and these levels cause variation between performance between otherwise identical releases. Miniature expressions (20cl) frequently achieve disproportionately strong results relative to their volume.
Auction house performance shows distinct patterns, emphasising the importance of selecting the right route if you decide to sell. European auctions demonstrate particularly strong performance for certain expressions, with some achieving 10-15% premiums over identical UK sales, though this varies significantly by distillery.
The market demonstrates considerable resilience compared to many premium whisky categories, with values holding relatively stable in recent months. For collectors who acquired bottles before the wider whisky market peaks of 2020/2022, current conditions continue to present favourable selling opportunities, particularly for the more sought-after closed distillery expressions.
Those seeking to enter the market would be wise to consider the second and third tier Rare Malts expressions, which offer compelling value and growth potential compared to the headline-grabbing premium expressions.
How to Sell Your Rare Malts Selection?
As the data above shows, it is important to choose the right time and place to sell your bottle of Rare Malts. Not all auctions can generate the same results and choosing the right place to sell is important.
If you complete the contact form above, we can connect you with a specialist auctioneer who will provide a free, no-obligation valuation and expert advice on selling your bottle. The best whisky auctioneers will offer a free of charge collection service if you have a number of bottles, or even offer access to their own courier service if you just have a few.
Auctions often take place each month and commission varies from 5-10%+VAT and listing fees. The benefits of auction are a near guaranteed sale (if the reserve is sensible) and a quick payout after the sale. The auctioneer will advise on a suitable reserve in advance of the sale.
Alternatively, you may consider selling to a retailer. However, retailers typically offer around 30–50% of their listed price due to factors like VAT, corporation tax, and slow stock turnover, which can impact their buying decisions more than you might expect. If you sell to a retailer you will be expected to post the bottle to them yourself, although they might help with this too. Payment terms will be quick, but you will likely have to contact around 5-10 retailers to ensure you get the best possible price.
