According to the Scotch Whisky Association there are 152 whisky distilleries in Scotland. But who owns them? Some distilleries are independent, but others are owned by parent companies responsible for investment in the distillery, and oversight of all their operations.
This list focuses on current and notable scotch whisky distillery ownership. It’s not an exhaustive list as the industry changes quickly, with new distilleries opening, silent distilleries returning to production, and ownership structures changing through acquisitions. Where a distillery is primarily used for grain whisky production we have made a note where relevant.

Diageo
Diageo remains the largest owner of scotch whisky distilleries. The company states that it owns 31 distilleries across Scotland. Production at Teaninich was temporarily halted (expected through to mid-2026), but it remains in Diageo ownership.
