What To Look For
Each bottle of Macallan Exceptional Single Cask has a cask number on the front, usually containing the release year within it. For example, the 1950 67-year-old’s cask number is 2018/ASB-1683/13, 2018 being the year of release. Underneath this there is a number of headings including cask type, distilled & filled, bottled, limited edition, cask selected by, and reserved. You should also look out for the Macallan logo; an image of Easter Elchies House with the test “EST.1824” underneath it. On the neck of the bottle will be the year of release and the shortened cask number.
The Macallan Exceptional Single Cask 1950 67-year-old is by far the most valuable and sought-after bottle in the series. This is due to its healthy age and vintage statements.
A bottle of the Macallan Exceptional Single Cask 1950 67-year-old recently sold for £76,000.
The Six Factors That Affect The Price Of Macallan Exceptional Single Cask Whisky
There are six factors that will affect the price of your bottle of Macallan Exceptional Single Cask whisky. These are the age of the whisky, the bottling date, the vintage, whether it is a single cask edition, the level of the whisky and the condition of the label and box.

Age of Whisky
This refers to the number of years the whisky has spent maturing in the cask, not how long it has been in the bottle. The age is indicated on the label and can vary from 5 to over 30 years old.

Bottling Date
This relates to when the whisky was bottled. As bottles from a specific year are consumed, the remaining bottles become rarer, so a ‘standard’ malt released in the 1980’s can become sought after.

Distillation Year
The distillation year refers to the specific year in which the whisky was distilled (made). It is one of the most important factors that can impact the price of your bottle of Macallan Exceptional Single Cask.

Label & Packaging
The label on a bottle of Macallan Exceptional Single Cask is very important and if it is damaged in any way then this will have a negative impact on the value. A bottle without its original box could be worth up to 30% less.

Level
The level of the whisky has a large impact on the value. It should be into the neck (the narrow part). As alcohol is more volatile than water it is the alcohol that will evaporate first, which damages the flavour.

Single Cask Bottlings
Single cask bottlings are generally more sought after, as by default they are unique. Look out for numbers on your bottle like XXX/250, which would indicate a single cask edition.

Communication was perfect; punctual, to the point and polite. Collection and delivery were taken care of by Mark and instruction was clear and easy to follow. The sale was done very [quickly], and the money was in my bank account the next day. I would highly recommend his services.”

The History Of The Macallan Exceptional Single Cask Series
The Exceptional Single Cask Series is made up of fantastically unique and special bottlings from a single cask, hand chosen by the Macallan whisky makers. The whisky makers do not go looking for a whisky to join this series, rather one is elevated to the status of Exceptional Single Cask material when it is happened upon during routine assessment and tasting. As a result, whisky lovers can be sure that each single malt in this collection is nothing short of extraordinary.
The series was first launched in 2017, with a range of bottles ranging from 12 to 22 years-old. The collection has been expanded since then, whenever the whisky makers happen upon a dram worthy of the collection. There are now 31 bottles in the series.
Due to the fact that the whiskies in this collection only ever come from a single cask, there are extremely limited numbers of each expression. The highest number of bottles in the collection is 643 – the number of 2017/ESB-9100/13 that there are in the world. The smallest number of bottles in the collection is 111 – the number of 2017ESB-9182/01 that there are in the world.
On Macallan’s website you can read about each bottle in the series so far, including the cask type, the distilling date, the reserve date, the bottling date, and the name of the whisky maker who selected it for the series. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there are no prices on any of these bottles. The bottles are only available to buy from specialist and luxury retailers in the United Kingdom, at auctions on the secondary market, or from private sellers.
