Laggan Bay Distillery, a new family-owned single malt operation on Islay, has filled its first cask of whisky at its site overlooking the sands of Laggan Bay. The milestone marks the beginning of production for the distillery, which takes its name from the windswept coastline defined by its “ever-changing Atlantic outlook”.
The distillery is led by Malcolm Rennie, an Islay native with decades of experience in Scotch whisky production. He has assembled a new distilling team on the island, focused on creating a spirit that reflects both place and intent.

Leonard Russell, Managing Director of Ian Macleod Distillers, framed the occasion as the start of a long-term endeavour. “Filling the first cask at Laggan Bay is an important moment for us as a family business,” he said. “We have built this distillery with a long term vision, knowing the whisky will grow into its own character.”
Russell added: “We are not here to replicate what Islay already has — we’re here to add to it, with a whisky shaped by its place, our people, and the choices we make from the start.”
Distillery Manager, Malcolm Rennie, expressed a personal connection to the project. “Coming home to Islay to help shape Laggan Bay single malt is something I’m proud of,” he said. “It’s a rare chance to create a new whisky with a strong sense of place, rooted in the character and traditions that define Islay.”
The distillery’s location on Laggan Bay places it along waters frequently visited by bottlenose dolphins, an iconic presence reflected in the distillery’s logo.
Environmental sustainability has been built into the distillery’s design. The site incorporates wetlands to manage liquid waste and support local wildlife. The business plans to explore renewable energy solutions in partnership with other local organisations.
Laggan Bay Distillery is also positioning itself as a contributor to the Islay community through local employment and ongoing investment. The distillery will take part in Fèis Ìle, the island’s annual whisky and music festival, this year. On 31 May 2026, the site will open its doors for a public event, offering an early opportunity to experience the distillery and meet the team.
