If you are a whisky lover, the chances are that at some point you have considered the benefits of owning your very own cask of whisky. As well as buying a cask through a broker like Mark Littler LTD, in 2025 is possible to buy casks direct from some distilleries. There are also parent companies and even some independent bottlers that offer entire casks. In this article we have collated as many as places as we can find (excluding brokers and dealers) where you can buy an entire cask of whisky.
It is important to note that many of the companies we have linked to below explicitly state that they are not cask investments. The lists in this article are intended as a way to explore and compare casks offered directly from the whisky makers to consumers, and should be used as an initial starting point when buying a cask. Whether they are right for you is down to your specific circumstances and the offering you’re considering. We have more information on buying a cask as an investment here.

Where Can You Buy An Entire Cask Of Whisky In 2025?
The below tables summarise the different places you can buy casks from. They includes every distillery we have found where you can buy a whole cask of new make whisky, and there is a separate table for mature casks offered as premium options by some parent companies. As we are a specialist whisky broker we have added equivalent from prices for casks sold by us for comparison.
At the end of the article we have included a list of distilleries that have sold casks in the last few years but no longer have an active private cask programme. For detailed information on each company’s offering, including prices, please see each company specific section below.

Important Considerations
It is important to reiterate that we are not endorsing or otherwise any of the opportunities listed. Whoever you decide to buy a cask from you should ensure you do your full due diligence before purchasing the cask.
It is also extremely important to note that many of the distilleries and companies specify that their offerings are not suitable for an investment and some require you to bottle the cask after a certain period. As such they are a way to support the distillery and enjoy some exclusive whisky but you need to ensure you are aware of any future financial commitment.
Why Do Distilleries Sell Casks To The Public?
Selling casks to the public can release capital, build brand loyalty and create a premium and bespoke experience for distilleries to offer their customers. The latter “experience value” is something that is increasingly important in luxury orientated whisky markets.
For new distilleries it has historically been a way to release funds while waiting for the whisky to mature, and increase brand visibility. For distilleries it can also be a lot of additional work, so today there are a select few that will offer new make casks of whisky direct to private buyers.
For the parent companies of established distilleries that are offering mature casks then these programmes are a way to add a premium experience for their VIP customers. These casks are usually selected because they are ready for bottling now and have limits on how long you should keep them for. Whether your budget is £2,000 or £90,000 make sure you do your research to decide if what is being offered meets your current and future needs.
Everywhere You Can Buy A Premium, Mature Cask
Some distilleries and parent companies also now offer a premium experience for their high and ultra high net worth customers. They offer a small selection of hand-picked casks for customers to select and personalise for immediate bottle. These are explicitly not sold as an investment; they are a luxury experience, with prices starting from tens of thousands of pounds up to in excess of two million.
The List: Where To Buy Casks Direct In 2025
Borders Distillery – Casks from £2,400
Borders distillery is a Lowlands distillery that opened in March 2018 and has planned to make available just 1,837 casks. This is to commemorate the fact they are the first whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837. The distillery is located in Hawick, probably best known as the birthplace of tweed.
Borders casks start from £2,400 and you can specify your fill date as well as choosing between five cask types. They also suggest they can help you bottle the cask if you wish. Bottling doesn’t appear to be compulsory, although it is specifically not included, so (as always) ensure you understand costs if that is what you intend.
For more information, visit Borders’ website.
Mark Littler Ltd – Casks From £2,000
We are not a distillery, but we’ve added the starting price for our new make casks in here for reference. We source casks from the secondary market and as such can offer options from a range of distilleries at a range of ages, including casks from distilleries that you cannot buy from directly.
Many of the options in this list are a great way to support a new distillery or if you’re a keen whisky fan to create your very own whisky bottling. The casks we offer are selected because we believe they offer a sound option for those looking for a cask investment. However we can also help you bottle casks if you’re after that side of the experience too.
Our new make spirit starts at around £2,000 for a barrel. We also offer a broad selection of older casks around 4 to 12 years old from £4,000 to £8,000. This “young” age range is still competitively priced but gives you a head start on your investment compared to new make. All our casks are sold with a delivery order and stored in your name at the warehouse, giving you the same protection as you would get buying direct.
More information on how to buy a cask can be found here.
Penderyn Distillery – Casks from £2,900
Penderyn Distillery creates Welsh whisky and was founded in 2000 to become Wales’ first whisky distillery in over 100 years. It now has three sites across Wales. The original distillery is located in the foothills of the Brecons Beacons National Park in South Wales and was opened in 2004. In 2021 they opened a site in Llandudno and this was joined in 2023 by a site in Swansea, the latter of which paused distillation in 2024 due to fluctuations in demand.
Penderyn’s cask maturation programme begins at £2,900 for a first fill ex-bourbon barrel and there are a range of other cask types and sizes available, included peated options. Maturation period is suggested at 5 to 7 years and the cask must be bottled on maturation so ensure you take those costs into account.

Distilling re-started in 2014 and their first whisky was released in 2018.

As well as a range of cask types and sizes you can also choose between new make and older casks all the way back to 2014. New make ex-bourbon barrels start at £3,000. The distillery lays claim to having the purest water in Scotland.
Arran have had various cask programmes since they opened and at their sister distillery Lagg. You cannot get standard Arran casks anymore or Lagg casks, but you can still get involved with the (relatively) new distillery through a cask of their peated Lochranza whisky. Additional considerations
Please note that this guide is not meant as a suggestion of what to buy but is simply intended as a guide and starting point for your investigation into cask purchases. If you are looking at buying a cask in 2025, whether from a broker like ourselves or direct from a distillery, then you need to make sure that it is the right option for you.
Bottling costs
Some of distillery offers listed above specify that the whisky must be bottled at the end of the maturation period. As such, you need to ensure you are fully aware of the costs and taxes involved in bottling and the implications of how that might shape the purchase of an investment or otherwise. Many of the distilleries give examples of the expected costs and will likely advise you of them if you ask.
You can also use our cask calculator for more information on bottling costs.
Taxes
Whisky casks are classed as a wasting asset with an expected lifetime under 50 years, and therefore in the UK they are not currently subject to capital gains tax. However bottles are not classed as a wasting asset and therefore capital gains tax will be applicable over relevant thresholds. We are not tax experts and we suggest taking professional advice if you are unsure.
