Your Cask Buying Journey

Buying a cask of whisky is just the beginning of a much bigger journey. What happens after the purchase—how your cask is stored, sampled, matured and ultimately used—is every bit as important as choosing the right distillery in the first place.

Most owners follow one of two routes:
1. Continuing to mature the cask to allow the whisky to develop further depth, character and value, or
2. Bottling the cask, whether for personal enjoyment, a family project, gifting, or a private-label release.

Each option comes with practical considerations: warehouse selection, sampling schedules, insurance, re-racking opportunities, bottling logistics, design and compliance, and the strategy for when (or whether) to sell. At Mark Littler Ltd, we guide you through every stage with clear advice and trusted partners, helping you avoid the common pitfalls that can catch new owners out.

Our support doesn’t end at the point of purchase. We stay with you throughout the life of your cask, giving you simple, informed guidance so you can enjoy the process—and make the most of your whisky—whichever path you choose.

Buying To Bottle

Macallan-Coronation

If you choose to bottle your cask, you’ll want the final product to do justice to the whisky inside. We can connect you with some of the best in the business, from former Macallan designers and specialist packaging firms to trusted bottling facilities, import/export providers, and marketing experts.

Whether your goal is a personal project or a commercial release, we’ll help you create a world-class product that matches your vision and budget.

Buying To Mature

Buy-A-Cask-Of-Whisky

If you decide to continue maturing your cask, we’ll help you put everything in place for long-term success. This includes opening and approving a personal account at an HMRC-bonded warehouse, setting up the right insurance, and choosing the best storage facility for your needs. For shorter-term plans (e.g. bottling within five years), we can recommend warehouses with on-site bottling capabilities. For longer-term maturation (10–20+ years), we’ll guide you towards facilities known for exceptional cask management. Either way, we make sure your whisky is in safe hands.

You will have you own private account at the bonded warehouse where your cask will be matured.

Education Not Sales

At Mark Littler Ltd we sell whisky casks, but we are not sales people. Our aim when we started out with casks was to educate people about casks as an investment and that is the ethos we still work with.

As well as our extensive online library of guides, articles and videos when you choose to buy a cask with us you will have the opportunity to book in for 30 minute Q & A session with us where we will answer all your questions about casks and whisky cask investment. This is not a sales call, just a chance for you to ask questions and get answers. Please note that due to exceedingly high demand we do have a waiting list for both purchasing casks and free consultation calls. If you need answers faster then please get in touch regarding paid consultations.

The ORIGINAL Cask Buying Guide

Before whisky cask investment became mainstream, Mark Littler Ltd produced the first truly independent Whisky Cask Buying Guide — a resource that has since been heavily copied and plagiarised across the industry. We’ve always taken a different approach: our aim is to dissuade you from buying a cask just as much as to persuade you, because responsible ownership begins with understanding the risks as well as the rewards.

If you’re considering buying a cask and want to educate yourself properly, our Whisky Cask Buying Guide is the best place to start. It’s written to give you clear, honest information, helping you make the right choice—not just the easiest one.

Cask Buying Due Diligence

Whisky casks can be a great investment, both from a personal and financial perspective. They are also an unregulated investment, and so it is important that you understand the technical side of taking ownership and the potential pitfalls to be aware of. These articles cover some of the most common issues we encounter when consumers come to us for advice.

Buying New Make Whisky

“New make” is the term used to describe freshly distilled or very young spirit before it is formally whisky. Buying new make is usually the cheapest way of buying a cask, however it requires a much longer investment term, and is therefore not for everyone. Read more about buying new make in these articles.
