Atom Brands has released a limited edition series of five single cask Scotch whiskies, each sourced from distilleries that still use traditional worm tub condensers. The Wormtub Single Cask collection highlights a centuries-old distillation method now practised by fewer than 20 distilleries in Scotland.
The series comprises a Knockdhu 10 Year Old, Glen Elgin 11 Year Old, Mortlach 12 Year Old, Craigellachie 13 Year Old, and Balmenach 24 Year Old. All five expressions were matured in sherry casks and bottled at natural cask strength, with ABV ranging from 49.8% to 61.6%.

Outturns are strictly limited across the range. The Craigellachie is the rarest at just 93 bottles, while the Glen Elgin has the largest release at 386 bottles.
Worm tub condensers are among the oldest pieces of equipment in Scotch whisky production. Spirit vapour travels from the still through a long, coiled copper pipe submerged in a cold water tub, condensing back into liquid as it cools. The reduced copper contact is widely credited with producing a heavier, meatier style of spirit, though the method is expensive to maintain and labour-intensive to operate.
Sam Simmons, head of whisky at Atom Brands, curated the collection. "In a world increasingly shaped by efficiency and automation, there is something quietly radical about a distillery still doing it the hard way — and something deeply satisfying about the liquid it produces," he said.
Simmons added: "For this release I have selected some damn tasty examples of the heavy, meatier and dried fruit style the worm tub condensed spirit is celebrated for. Single casks are the primary pigment of whisky creation, each one unique, unadulterated and unrepeatable."
Prices range from £79.95 for the Knockdhu and Glen Elgin expressions to £89.95 for the Mortlach and Craigellachie, while the 24-year-old Balmenach commands £199.95. The cask types are predominantly PX hogsheads, with the Craigellachie matured in a PX Octave and the Balmenach in an Oloroso Butt.
Official tasting notes from the brand describe the Mortlach as "classy, refined and immensely appetising" and the Balmenach as "the crown jewel of the series," with notes of cocoa, dried tropical fruits and a "full, oily, fudgy character."
The Wormtub Single Cask series is available now through Master of Malt and via Maverick Drinks for the trade.
